How an Addict Quits an Addiction

                           By Jon Cuozzo

Too often I hear people say, “RU doesn’t work!” or “RU is just an-                           other Bible memory program.” First of all, these people were not around long enough to see a change, and secondly, these people missed some common sense that I would like to address in these five steps to conquering addiction.

  1. The addict must realize that he has a problem. It doesn’t matter if everyone else on planet earth sees this person’s problem. Without the addict analyzing the issue and coming to the conclusion that it is a problem, then there will be no recovery.
  2. He must want the help. Even Jesus Christ could not help those who refused His help. Reformers Unanimous provides no sprinkle dust to cure addicts. If a person is skeptical about our program and doesn’t want our help, we cannot help him.
  3. Get the addiction completely out of the house, car, etc. Common sense goes a long way in quitting strongholds. The addict must cleanse his life of the addiction if he wishes to conquer it. For example, if a person is attending RU for a smoking addiction, I doubt that we will get much accomplished with his pack of cigarettes being in his back pocket. If someone has an Internet sexual problem, the connection to the internet must be severed. The alcoholic must not have easy access to the six-pack in the refrigerator.
  4. Stay away from any influences that will lead the addict back to the addiction. Sometimes former alcoholics make the mistake of returning to the bar to witness to old friends. This is extremely dangerous. Have the old friends meet you at a restaurant where there is no alcohol. If one is attempting to quit smoking, it is unwise to stand outside and talk to those on their smoke breaks.
  5. Get them into RU and church. If someone follows steps one through four, attending RU and church will transform the individual right away. When a person soaks himself in God’s Word, the amazing power of the Gospel will slash through every stronghold, every drudge, and every heartache, giving the addict new life–a life free from facing life’s trials alone, since they now have Jesus Christ them leading them through every difficulty they face.

Reformers Unanimous meets at 479 State Street, Hammond, on Friday nights at 7:00 p.m. No advance notice is needed for someone to attend, but more information about the program is available by contacting Mr. Jon Cuozzo at (219) 558-2637.
