by Vaughn West, as told to the editor
I grew up in Oakland, California, in a Baptist home. I was able to know that my great-grandfather, Pastor Alan Augusta Britton, and my uncles were ministers. I remember one of the main rules that was nonnegotiable was that we had to attend Sunday school and church on Sundays or there were no other activities for us that afternoon.
I got away from my upbringing when I turned about 16, and I entered the entertainment field doing stand up comedy. Although I finished school, went to junior college, and traveled the world, there came the worldly things too, such as drugs, booze, and women. Thank God, I had held on to some of my upbringing. I received my salvation on August 3, 2006; at 1:00 a.m. Brother John Cole led me to Christ in that early hour of the morning. He was the doorman at the building where I lived. We would talk for hours, and I would see him reading his Bible. I asked him to get me a Bible.
He said, “I will, but you won’t understand it if you don’t trust and believe in Jesus.” He then showed me how to be saved.
